Ben Reed, MD – Neonatal ICU
“Dr. Ben Reed is passionate about safe quality care. He came in on his day off, working for over nine hours with the East NICU team of Nurses and Respiratory Therapists during annual credentialing. He brought Sim baby with him, which has the latest technology for running neonatal code simulations. Dr. Reed was able to input vital signs throughout the simulations into the iPad that runs the screen showing the heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and blood pressure. The team responded to meet the Sim baby’s needs. Dr. Reed is a great teacher, serving our staff and helping us be our best for improved outcomes of our tiniest patients.
In the past six months he has spearheaded several initiatives that have improved patient care and family satisfaction while decreasing staff burden. Recognizing that we could be caring for substance exposed infants in a more family-friendly way, he implemented an innovative program called Eat, Sleep, and Console for infants at risk of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). This has led to lower NICU admissions overall for NAS and keeps more infants and mothers together after birth. Most impressively, his work has decreased the length of stay for NAS babies that do end up in the NICU for 26 days to 16 days on average.”
