What Are Uterine Fibroids?
Uterine Fibroids – also known as benign smooth muscle tissue - are abnormal, but non-cancerous, growths that can develop in the uterus during a woman's childbearing years. Fibroids can become quite large and result in severe abdominal pain and heavy periods.
What Are the Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids?
- Pain in the abdomen, low back, and/or pelvis
- Abnormal, heavy, irregular, and/or painful menstruation - or spotting
- Abdominal distension or cramping
- No signs or symptoms, in some cases
What Causes Uterine Fibroids
While we don’t know the exact cause of fibroids, we do know that certain women are at higher risk of having them. This includes:
- Obese women
- African-American women
- Women whose mothers had fibroids
What Minimally Invasive Options Are Available?
Laparoscopic Radiofrequency Ablation - The laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation procedure, commonly known as fibroid ablation, is the first and only system to utilize radiofrequency ablation, laparoscopic ultrasound, and guidance mapping to treat women suffering from fibroids. The procedure works by applying controlled heat directly into the fibroid, causing it to shrink over time.
Laparoscopic or Robotic Myomectomies - Erlanger offers laparoscopic or robotic myomectomies (fibroid removal) for women with symptomatic fibroids who want to save their uterus for future fertility.
Laparoscopic or Robotic Hysterectomies - For definitive management of fibroids, we can perform laparoscopic or robotic hysterectomies (removal of the uterus). Women who undergo this procedure will no longer have menstrual bleeding or be able to become pregnant.
