Stop the Bleed

A national awareness campaign to educate first responders and the general public on how to stop severe bleeding and potentially save lives in an emergency

Uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death from trauma. The greater the number of people who know how to control bleeding in an injured patient, the greater the chances of surviving that injury. You can help save a life by knowing how to stop bleeding if someone, including yourself, is injured.

Erlanger Health System provides Stop the Bleed – Bleeding Control classes free to the public. If you would like to request a course be provided for your church, business, school or community group click here to submit your request.

Bleeding Control Basic Course

A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes. Thus, it is critically important to quickly stop blood loss. Uncontrollable bleeding is the number-one cause of preventable death from trauma. Those nearest to someone with a bleeding injury can make a life-saving difference, if they are adequately trained to provide first care to the injured person.

This course will teach the importance of stopping the bleed. Participants will learn how to:

  • Identify the source of bleeding
  • Look for life-threatening injuries
  • Learn basic life-saving interventions including bleeding control with direct pressure, gauze packs and a tourniquet, as well as how to pack a wound

All participants will have the opportunity to perform each skill during the course. This course is appropriate for both the general public and healthcare providers.
