A pacemaker is a small device that helps your heart beat more regularly. It does this with a small electric stimulation that helps control your heartbeat. Using a minimally-invasive procedure, your doctor places the pacemaker under the skin on your chest, just under your collarbone. Some people only need a pacemaker for a short time (such as after a heart attack) and may use a version that’s outside the skin with a battery unit worn on your belt. Recent advances in technology have made cardiac pacemakers not only more safe and effective – but smaller. Today’s device is about the size of two half-dollars placed on top of each other. People who have pacemakers can lead almost entirely unrestricted lives.
A pacemaker may be needed when
• Your heart beats too slow or too fast
• Your heart doesn’t beat regularly
• Your heart’s electrical pathways are blocked
