Atrial flutter is a type of heart rhythm disorder that occurs when the upper chambers of the heart beat too fast. The heartbeats in atrial flutter are more organized than in atrial fibrillation. But like Afib, atrial flutter may also lead to serious complications such as stroke.
Symptoms
- Fast or irregular heart rate
- Sensation of an abnormal heart beat
- Racing heart
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness
Treatments
One or a combination of the following may be sued to normalize your heart rate, bring your heart beat under control, or prevent blood clots.
- Medications such as blood thinners and channel blockers
- Carioversion which uses an electrical pulse to restore normal heart rhythm
- Catheter ablation which destroys abnormal tissue in the heart to restore normal heart rhythm.
