This breakthrough device uses electrical impulses to bring the heart back into a regular rhythm if it starts to beat irregularly. It also uses this electrical charge to protect against sudden cardiac arrest. About the size of a pocketwatch, an ICD is implanted near the heart through a minimally invasive procedure.
